The Benefits of Laser Surgery

We are proud to offer laser surgery, a revolutionary technique that minimizes swelling and bleeding  during surgery and results in dramatically reduced pain and discomfort post surgery. Long used in human healthcare, laser technology is a proven service with multiple applications. Only recently have veterinarians turned to laser surgery.

A laser is an intense beam of light. Using an instrument that allows it to be precisely controlled, the laser beam replaces the traditional scapel in many procedures. Laser energy instantly vaporizes the water found in tissues, allowing it to "cut" or essentially remove an extremely small area of tissue. The energy seals nerve endings and blood vessels as it moves through the tissue, resulting in less bleeding, less pain and virtually no trauma to the surrounding tissue.

The extreme precision leaves healthy tissue surrounding it untouched. The high heat of laser energy kills bacteria and microorganisms as it moves through diseased areass, reducing the chance of infection. For all these reasons your pet is likely to feel less discomfort and have fewer complications after a surgery using laser.

 Laser surgical Procedures

Cat Declaw. Cats that are declawed using laser experience significantly reduced pain and swelling over the old, previous methods. In some states it is the only approved option for this otherwise painful surgery. Post operatively the cats are playing  and using their paws like nothing happened soon after surgery.

Soft Palate Resection. Many breed of dogs such as Bulldogs,Pugs, Boston Terriers, and Boxers are prone to an elongation of the soft palate that is best corrected with laser surgery. This abnormality can produce respiratory distress characterized by noisy, loud breathing, snoring and coughing. Prior to the advent of laser surgery, a great deal of bleeding and post operative swelling was commmon, sometimes leading to  serious complications. Laser correction of soft palate elongation has dramatically reduced this risk.

Stenotic Nares. In many of the same breeds listed above: Pugs, Boston Terriers as well as ShihTsu and other breeds, the nostrils are restrictive and do not allow a dog to breath normally thru their nose. Laser opening of the nostrils can greatly improve the comfort of these patients.

Prolapsing Nictating Mambrane. Also called "cherry eye" this condition is common to many breeds including the Cocker Spaniel and Beagle. The inner eyelid everts and rolls out, showing up as a membranous structure protruding from the inner corner of the eye. Laser surgery can correct this problem while preserving the tear function in the eyelid, with less swelling and tendency for scar tissue.

Routine Surgical Procedures. Spay and neuter surgey can be less stressful amd uncomfortable with the use of the laser. Even though we still use our pain management program, our patients are morec omfortable following their surgery and return to normal activity faster.

Lumps and small masses. Laser assisted removal of warts,  and other sruface irregularities can be ablated by laser and often require only local analgesia. Larger masses are amenable to laser as well, yielding less disruption to the surrounding tissue.

Non elective Abdominal Surgery. many types of abdominal procedure can be perfromed including biopsy, cystotmy, mastectomy and laparotomy. Less bleeding using the laser is important in these surgeries and also allows a faster recovery.
